He has been a soloist under such notable conductors as Robert Shaw, Gregg Smith, and Sir David Willcocks. His choral music is widely sung and is published by Augsburg Fortress, Hal Leonard, Mark Foster, and Kjos Music, for whom he edits a series of sacred choral octavos.

From 1990-93 he held the Regents' Lectureship at the University of New Mexico. Based on creative work, teaching and community involvement, it is the highest award granted to a younger faculty member. Ellingboe also served as President of the New Mexico Chapter of the American Choral Directors Association from 1992-95. He is the editor of two books of songs by the Norwegian composer Edvard Grieg. These have been widely hailed as significant additions to the understanding of Grieg and his music.
