Discuss different places where violins, violas or cellos might be found: in a string quartet, in a school orchestra, in a symphony orchestra, in a mariachi band (violin only), in a Celtic band (violin and occasionally cello), in a bluegrass band (violin only), etc. Discuss how many other types of instruments have strings: guitars (folk and electric), banjos, electric bass, dulcimers, autoharps, mandolins, etc.

Make sure that the students realize the smaller instruments have a higher timbre (tone color), while the larger instruments have a lower, or deeper timbre.
